In this camera workshop we started off with a recap of what we learned last term and started learning about filming with different lenses and the differences between shooting a music video and an opening title sequence.
the first thing we discussed how to focus using the new lenses. Last term we use zoom lenses and now we will use prime lenses. Prime lenses don't have the same mechanisms to focus so we had to learn a new way using a tape measure. The reason for using the prime lenses is because the quality is much better. The way we focus is by measuring the distance between the camera and the main person. We then take that measurement and use that number on the dial pictured below. We were also introduced to a new type of lense that we just got that is a much higher quality lense that is a cross between a zoom and prime lense.
We were introduced to monitors and learned about lighting etiquette, for example before turning on the lights it is important to warn everyone so that no one looks directly into the light and risk hurting themselves. The next thing that we learned is shutter. When were filming it is important to get the proper degree of shutter to make it fit the shot. a 180 degree shutter will make the movement look natural and for a sharper look a lower shutter will be useful. Having a lower shutter is good for bands because you are able to see the details better. Higher shutter looks a lot softer and it is useful for slower softer songs. The shutter is how much light is being let in.
We then discussed how to change vibes for the music video using angles and how to set up our artists and bands to create a more interesting thing to watch. We took turns setting people up and angling the cameras.
