Lighting workshop

 Lighting workshop

we learned about the differences between house lights and workers lights. the house light are the main lights. we then learned about the one light trick, where you take a studio light and put it as close to the lense as possible and on top.

the next thing me we learned was the name of lights, pictured on the left is the red head light  it uses lots of energy. it is a light that we use often in the studio for filming.

the next thing we learned was to change the exposure once the lights have been turned on. changing exposure makes the shot look a lot more professional.

here is a side by side comparison before and after we have corrected the exposure.
We also learned a trick about softening shadows, Matt showed us how taking a piece of waxy paper and putting it in front of the light.

we then looked at lighting strategies, the first of which was 3 point lighting. 3 point lighting is obviously putting three lights in three points. we placed a light in front of our model, we placed a light behind our model and one on the other side of our model.

3 point lighting is used for news and interviews. Three points of light, key light which does most of the lighting, fill light which is used to fill in the shadows opposite to the red head light, back light to light her from the back to give an edge around her so she stands out from the back.

the next thing we looked at was using styrofoam block to bounce light back onto the model.

using this and the wax paper allows light to be a lot softer and it diffuses it. beauty lighting

Matt also taught us a trick about shielding the top of the camera lens to soften shadows.

pictured below is a video showing the comparison with the hand shielding vs without the hand shielding.

the next thing we learned was coloured lights such as vinyls and fluorescents. vinyls are sheets of plasticky colours that we place in front of studio lights to set different vibes.

fluorescents are lights that have glass cylinders around them, we can swap out different colours throughout shoots. These are often used in music videos.
